Technology is changing the way we interact with the world, and it’s changing the way we exercise as well. We covered how to get a great workout at home using DVD’s and videos last week, and this week I’m going to give you a few more ways to use technology to exercise at home.

1. Streaming video websites.

Thanks to today’s faster internet speeds, websites like Netflix and Amazon are starting to offer exercise videos for a one-time fee, a monthly subscription, or even for free!

For example, on Amazon Jillian Michael’s 30 Day Shred is available on DVD for $8.74. You can buy the digital version and stream it on your computer or TV as many times as you want for $4.99. Or you can buy Level 1, 2, or 3 {you have 3 workout options on the video} for $1.99 each. You don’t need a big investment up-front; technology is giving you more options these days!

You also have lots of free online options for streaming exercise videos too- like Hulu and ExerciseTv.tv- a website with free videos and even workout plans!

Netflix also has several streaming exercise videos. For a subscription fee of $9 per month you can choose from yoga, Pilates, kickboxing, abs, and more. You could mix up your workout every day!

2. Old-fashioned TV channels.

Cable or satellite TV can give you even more options for low investment exercise videos. You may already have a cable channel on your plan that features free workout videos {like Denise Austin’s Daily Workout on the Lifetime}. Basic cable usually offers a local channel with the same thing early in the morning. If we had cable or satellite, I would love to have that option!

3. Game systems.

One of the newest advances in exercise technology has come in recent years-using the gaming system to get fit. The Wii made by Nintendo has made fitness an integral part of their game system. Using the Wii and the Wii Fit board accessory, you can do yoga, track daily or weekly weigh-ins and measurements, do step aerobics, boxing, tennis, Zumba, and more.

With the Kinect kit, the Xbox can provide you with another way to exercise at home.  You can choose games like Zumba, the Biggest Loser Ultimate Workout, and even UFC MMA training games {I would choose that one out of the three for sure!}.

4. iPhones, iPods, and Tablets.

Another amazing advancement in technology allows you to workout anywhere and anytime- the personal data device. iPods, iPhones, iPads and other tablets all have the ability to stream data wirelessly- many of those even using cellular plans to provide the internet anywhere in the world.

You watch Netflix and other streaming videos on your personal device, or subscribe to free exercise podcasts through iTunes- short videos from personal trainers or group fitness instructors that give you new moves and workouts each week. iTunes fitness applications like Yoga, Couch to 5k, Hundred Pushups, and Lose It provide you with workout routines you can choose and mix-up as you like.

So no matter if you are in your living room, a hotel room on a business trip or vacation, or at little Jack’s soccer practice, you have your favorite exercise app or video ready to go.

Phew! Is your head spinning with all of your options yet? :) There are all kinds of ways to get a great workout at home- now the only thing you have to do is find your favorite!

You’ll know it when you hit your exercising “sweet spot,” because you’ll suddenly find that you’re almost excited about exercising!

Next week, we are moving on to the great outdoors for part 4 of our “sweet spot” series, and I’m going to give you more options for exercising outside!

Do you have a favorite fitness app or website? What keeps you exercising at home? I’d love to hear- I’m always looking for new ways to workout!
