and it's a..... {gender reveal baby #5}

it's a....
We had a last-minute gender reveal party this weekend, and it was so much fun. :) Only Rob and I knew this baby's gender, so we wanted to make it extra special when we told the kids.

I'll tell you though, making a gender cake might have been the most difficult baking project I've ever done. It was ridiculously hard to hide colorful crumbs under white icing. Next time I'll have to do chocolate icing. ;)

The top layer of the cake fell apart in three huge pieces as I was icing it Saturday afternoon {the reveal just 4 hours out!}, but I totally believe the Lord rescued me when He made me think to get the other cake plate we have and flip it over. Otherwise I might have fallen apart too. ;)

I think it turned out pretty well when it was all said and done:

I used buttercream icing, and added yellow sugar crystals and five little peeps for this baby:

Five little peeps. Wow. A friend told me I had a handful now! Hey, so when strangers tell me I've got my hands full, I can tell them, well technically just one hand full. heheh.

It's fun having kids with this guy. He's such a good daddy, and I think he liked having a cake party as much as I did.

Before we cut the cake, we made everyone vote for blue or pink {and tell me how much they'd pay me if they were wrong}:

lindsay {left},  abbie, and my sweet mom-in-law who took most of the pictures and votes!}

It ended up being heavy on the blue side {and apparently no one wanted to pay me}:

After everyone voted, we gathered in the dining room for the big surprise:

We finally cut the cake....

and....

......

I love the looks on all the faces here:

and it was....

Blue! Aqua, maybe Tiffany blue, but definitely blue! :D

Which means we're so excited to have another one of these in the house after 8 years:

{My sister-in-law Cayse made two signs for me- one girl and one boy! Isn't that the sweetest thing ever? :D}

But now the girls will officially be outnumbered! :D We have about 24 weeks left to pull our equal rank. :D

I can't wait to share more about all this crazy pregnancy stuff! So much has happened {and not happened}, but my energy is finally returning and we are in project mode again. We bought an infant car seat this weekend, and I bought two boy outfits last week. :D It's exciting to prepare for this kind of deadline. :) I'll keep you posted, if that's okay with you guys!

So.... I know several of you are mamas of many- do you have any tips for getting ready for baby #5?

Any tips for making the last few months of having just 4 extra special?

Have you ever been to a gender reveal party? Or made a colorful surprise cake?

Any tips on how not to eat this entire plate of cake leftovers? I want to eat it ALL.

We have 6 children (ages 11,almost 9,7,6,5,and our 2yo would have been 3 in April, but passed away back in May this past year), and us girls are sorely outnumbered...5 boys to our 1 daughter (and she's stuck in the middle too!). Now, I don't have any sage advice but I do have a great comeback (when you're in a smart-alec mood). When people questioned our sanity in having 6 children or even when they tried to hide their looks of "wha???" I always told them: "I'm not trying to populate the Earth - just out-number the idiots." But I always said it in love. ;)

So exciting! Sometimes I wish we could have another just to have one of these parties. They were definitely not a thing 10 years ago! So much fun! You did a great job on the cake--it looks scrumptious!

We have 5 here, too. There are t least six families here in Overton that have five. We call ourselves The Nickel Club, lol. My kids age and gender- G12, B9, G6, B4, B1. All 3 of the youngest have birthdays in Jan, my older two are in March.

I thought that we were done with birthing babies after my fourth. I put a limit on our family size and Mr was supposed to see the Dr. but car repairs used our savings and we found out that X was coming. I was really depressed and stressed because i felt that I was already stretched thin with my other kids and not providing them with enough time.

It took 3 months before my heart began to change and I slowly began to accept and embrace. God's plan is not always what I want, but it what I need. And X definitely brought our family closer together. I cannot imagine our life without our one little red-head.

SO THANKFUL for our suburban, lol!

How exciting and wonderful! Congratulations!!! And, yes! Please do give us every lil' detail. You just know I can't wait to hear about all that baby goodness! Once a Momma, always up for a baby/birth/pregnancy story! It's just good for our hearts! :)What a blessing for your sweet family! We have four from 10 to 2. My 2 year old crawled in bed with me this morning and I was cuddling and smelling her head and the sweetness that is her, when all of a sudden she grumpily exclaimed, "PLEASE STOP SNIFFING MY HEAD!!!" Lol! No fair!
Your reveal party looked like so much fun!!!! What a great idea! My husband and I bought a huge bunch of pink 'It's a girl' helium balloons after the ultrasound revealing our last baby's gender and we stuffed them into a giant black garbage sack (not as easy as it sounds). Our friends were watching our other kids and when we picked them up, we brought the garbage sack, got votes, then opened it to let out all the pink helium balloons. It was fun. :) Take care! I hope you can get some power naps in! :)

We have just one amazing little boy (almost 14 months).

I'm excited to have more =) Nervous, but still mostly excited!

We chose not to find out our son's gender until he was born. We always thought we'd do the same for our other children but now I'm thinking a gender reveal party might be kinda fun!

Congratulations! What an exciting time for your whole family!

We have five kiddos (3 boys, girl, boy) aged 10 - 4months... Like having four, some days are totally awesome/smooth-running and somedays are chaotic/messy! I'm in a place where I feel like I should be able to accomplish more in a day than actually ever happens. I need to daily make the choice to enjoy each day and all the necessary baby snuggles, to enjoy "doing school" all. day. long. with my older children b.c I'm pulled in so many directions, and know that eventually my arms will ache for newborn snuggles when he is toddling around with his older siblings. Having said that, my piece of advice for those beginning months is to always take a few extra minutes snuggling, talking to, enjoying your little one while he is awake and happy rather than plunking him down and quickly running off to accomplish the next task no matter how important that task might seem. Slow down and enjoy that period of time for it will indeed pass all too quickly!

BTW, 5th babies make awesome teacher's assistants esp. once they start smiling and cooing. Sit your sweet baby on your lap facing his siblings who may or may not be pouting or grumbling about school work. A few drooly smiles or coos later, everyone is going ga-ga over baby and the grumpies will likely have disappeared ;)

Also, I think this is the first time I've commented after reading for 6 months or so. I enjoy your blog so very much. It is a blessing to me. Did you change your comment options? It seems that I wasn't able to comment before though I've longed to several times. Or maybe it's my newborn mama brain...he, he!

I did change the comment system- apparently many people weren't able to comment so I went to another method and I much prefer it! I'm sad I waited so long to do it! It wasn't your preggo brain! you have a great memory!! and thank you for commenting- I LOVE getting them! :D

Congrats on the boy! That's one thing I don't get. God blessed me with 3 beautiful princesses and because of health reasons, I had to get my tubes tied. We will eventually have a prince, but thru adoption. Anyway, I too have thrown a gender reveal party and my reveal was very unique in that I've never seen anyone else do it. I'm hoping my way will catch on. My husband and I wanted to find out during the actual party, so at our ultrasound, we had to try to not look for parts. We asked the technician to write down the gender on a slip of paper and then seal it up. We immediately gave the paper to a trusted friend who went to Build-a-Bear and purchased a bear and dressed it in girly/princessy/ballerina clothes (since it was a girl). She held on to that bear and kept everything secret for 2 weeks until we could have our party. At our party, we had the room decorated in "It's a Girl!" and "It's a Boy!" decorations. I made pink and blue necklaces out of yarn, beads, and little pacifier beads. The necklaces were for playing the "bad word" game, where nobody could say "baby". I had everyone vote on a wall banner which gender they thought it was. My mother came up with a few gender neutral baby games. The food we served was things that I craved during my pregnancy like spaghettios and gummy worms. I had a friend make pink cupcakes with blue icing, and blue cupcakes with pink icing. Eventually, we had the big reveal. Build-a-Bears come in house shaped cardboard boxes, so it was easy to conceal. I had my 2 older girls open up the box and take the bear out and that's how everyone found out we were having another girl. Like I said, in all my research for this party, I haven't seen a single person do it the same way I did. Good luck with your 5 kids! I've got my hands full with just my 3 :)

Well, I'm in the minority here, having two children - both boys. But I have an idea for Amanda's name quandary. We never found out the gender until the birth, so we had to come up with names for both. For my second child, my husband and I could not agree on a girl's name. So I printed out two copies of the list of the Top 100 girl names. I asked him to circle any name that appealed to him - and out of 500 names we only had three matches! We settled on Julianna Nicole. However, God blessed us with another boy, so we didn't need the name after all. But it was nice to be ready! God bless you both, Amanda and Mandy, and prayers going up for both of you to have safe and smooth deliveries.

That is so very exciting! God has truly blessed you all! I haven't had a chance to comment, but wanted to send my best wishes :)

And what a fun party...have heard of some of my friends having their cake made by a bakery and then they all find out together. You are an awesome momma to do the cake.....It turned out so cute w/ the peeps!

I have 2 boys (5 & 3) and 1 girl (almost 2yo). I don't have any advice on 5, but I do know your other kids will be great helpers! I would encourage you to do as much fun stuff w/ your kids as you can before the baby comes. Especially enjoy having that afternoon free time that isn't filled w/ naps. My lil girl still needs an afternoon nap, so I feel like my boys miss out on some stuff cuz we have to try to get her nap in most days (or serious crankiness results) :) I am sure you will adjust like a champ....I've heard after 3, they just all fit right in!

Yay for a healthy baby boy! I really wanted to have a gender reveal party last year at this time with our 5th pregnancy but didn't for reasons I don't remember now! Such a fun party idea! We have 7 kids, we adopted two as babies before this last pregnancy and were even 3 boys, 3 girls until now... our baby girl tipped the scales last June when she was born. :) My best recommendation for you for adding a 5th, is to try and take away some of the stresses before baby arrives. Like freezing meals (baby always has to nurse and is fussy when dinnertime comes, haha) and arranging for friends to come pick up a couple of the older kids to get them some special playtime with their friends after baby is born... summertime is a great time to have a newborn - I loved the laidback schedule/life last summer - when adding a baby is anything but laidback!

Yay for your family! I'm happy that God is blessing you with another precious little soul! Here's what I want to know...Do you tell your names before hand? We're getting ready to adopt our two little ones and that's what I'm thinking about all the time. So give us the name scoop....And how did you come up with Avalie's name? Love it!

Another big congratulations! I love baby boys. :-)

I had #5 about 2 years ago. My other kids were 2, 4, 6, and 8 when she was born. I didn't find having 4 to be much different from having 5. It helped that she was such an easy-going, happy baby!

Ralene said...

A big congratulations!

Mandy said...

Oh how cool! Congratulations!! yay! I will have to do a post on that! We made up Avalie's name based on similar ones- and so far I've never heard anyone have it. I think the others are fairly traditional, but I'm excited to share this one's name. I don't know for sure if we'll wait to announce it yet, though. I have to talk to the hubs about how sure we are. :D

Congrats on a new boy to love!! I'm a mother of 4 living kiddos and a couple in heaven. I have a 7,5,3,and 1yr old with a possibility of more to come. For me, 1 to 2 was the biggest adjustment and adding 3 and 4 easier. I would think it would be that way with #5, but I guess it depends on the baby's temperament. Thankfully, I have had very good babies...I won't comment on some of mine after the baby stage! ;)

I've also had a hard time commenting before. I'm so glad I found your blog. I love the mix of things you write about. I also LOVE your hair! If you're still thinking about cutting it, please don't! I also have curly hair, but near as thick as yours...or quite as long. I also would love to know how you have time to go shopping with all your kids. I do so much more online shopping these days! ;)

First, and I'm sure you hear this a lot, but I adore your hair!!!

Second, HOW FUN!!! We did a cake reveal like you with our last baby. EXCEPT the sonogram tech was wrong. Baby had their ankles crossed, he told us, "Oh this is 100% a girl" but a 30-week 3D scan revealed otherwise, LOL! So we have video of a cake reveal of a PINK cake when we were having a boy, LOL! If he had really been a girl he would have been our fourth girl, no boys. He's our little prince!

Third, also pregnant with #5 but decided to wait to be surprised (killer!) so we have no idea what we're having. So I'm struggling with how to prepare. I did come up with the idea to have the sonogram tech write down the gender, seal it up and I sent it to my sister. She's the ONLY one who knows what we're having. I'm going to send her money and tell her what clothing we need for each gender since I got rid of almost all of it (I have like five random NB things for a boy and haven't gone through girl stuff yet). She'll buy what we need, box it up and we won't open it until baby is born so we have the stuff we need on hand. My sister hasn't been able to be near when I had my babies and the distance just sucks; this was a fun way to include her while getting my desperate need to be prepared taken care of.

And finally I was totally guessing BOY before I scrolled down to see the cake. I'm normally wrong so woo hoo! Congratulations!!! Any names or keeping that hush?

Great post! I have to tell you this story about my son and d-i-l's reveal party for their second child. Everything was planned to a 't'. Family was invited. Decorations carefully planned (from pinterest!) and executed. Cake ordered from a bakery because even the parents to be didnt know the gender. The cake was ordered over the phone and the parents asked the slightly crazy next door neighbor to open the sonogram envelope and tell the baker what gender to make the cake for. Done. So, the parents to be cut the cake together and revealed beautiful blue ombre layers. Many shouts, excited laughter and exclaimations of how nice it will be for little Noah (18 mo.) to have a little brother to play with! My son runs out to the car for the envelope with the sonogram in it so we can see baby's little head, and fingers, etc. THERE in plain letters....an arrow pointing to the genitals with the word 'girl!' on the screen shot!!!!! You should have seen the faces! Especially that of my d-i-l!! For about 10 minutes, they were having a boy. But its a GIRL!!!! Turns out, the slightly crazy neighbor didnt have his glasses when he read the results to the baker, but was convinced he could just 'wing it' and it would be fine. !!!! Of course we're thrilled either way. Just a great story to put in the baby book. :o)

We just have a little posse of three, so no big tips for 4 or more, but I love the cake! You did a great job! I think you should be able to eat all the leftovers - you are eating for two and you need energy/carbs for 5 - ha! I however, just need to put thoughts of cake aside and go work-out......

Congrats again and I can't wait to hear more in the weeks to come!

I will be making a cake to cut via Skype with our family in about 3 weeks:) Do you have any tips if I use white icing on how to not get any of the colored crumbs from the cake in the icing? White icing on a dark cake always makes me nervous! haha
