homemaking hack #4: wire fridge baskets

You know how there's always one thing that you really have to do when it comes to house cleaning or it will bug you constantly?

Yeah, that never happens to me. ;)

Okay, okay.... so that's not entirely true. I'm not a fan of cluttered surfaces- at least the permanent versions, anyway- having lots of trinkets on my shelves kind of makes me want to start a donation bag to GW asap. I like lots of cleared space if there's visual open space to be had. And then somehow I lose all care for how much clutter is behind a cabinet or a door. :)

If you came to my house and I opened my cabinet or fridge, I have a feeling you'd feel like an avalanche is about to happen. I try not to leave them open in case small children are around. ;)

For some weird reason in my brain, things just don't need to be organized if they're in cabinets and drawers. {a true mercy from Heaven at this point, because it would never happen anyway}. :)

But somewhere deep down, I think I would like to have clean fridge shelves that I can see through.... so  a few months ago, I found a little trick to help me organize my cold food better.

This week's homemaking hack was a super simple {and cheap} way for me to feel a little happier about the state of my refrigerator that will probably never be clean. :)

Believe me when I say this is as organized and clean as my fridge ever gets, and most often it doesn't look like this {it's not great, so don't look too closely! :P} :) I got a little crazy and wiped down all of the shelves instead of just two for my goals last week....hehee! Otherwise, I'd spare you the normal view. :)

I bought these little wire baskets in the Target dollar spot for $2.50 {what happened to the $1 stuff anyway?}, and because we buy eggs in bulk, I decided to use one of them to store our eggs:

I really love it! No more huge 18-egg cartons shoved in the fridge taking up a ton of room; now, a whole container will fit in the basket. And it's been so nice to be able to see how many eggs we have left at a glance too!

The only time I've dropped the basket was when I was hosting a Christmas party in December, and I can't remember how it happened, but I didn't put them on the shelf well enough and when I opened the door they fell out and broke on the rug. But I was also newly pregnant, nauseous, and clumsy {still going strong with that symptom in the 2nd tri. by the way}, sooo... it was definitely my fault. :)

I also have lots of little bags of buckwheat, flax, quinoa, etc. stored in the fridge in another little basket so they won't spill and stay organized-ish too. :D

Oh, by the way- those ginormous red dragon grapes? Awful. They have seeds...eeww {I'm spoiled to seedless, apparently}. Luckily the kids don't mind. ;) My four cute little fruit eaters will quickly dispose of them for me.

Do you have a favorite trick for keeping your fridge organized?

Or how about your favorite fridge cleaning trick? How do you stay warm and dry when you clean it out?

Have you ever seen those cute fridge coasters? Do they work or just get icky? :)

I love reading your posts! Here's what I do to keep my fridge clean; I line each shelf with press n seal so when there is a sticky mess, all I have to do is remove the press n seal! If you're looking for more tips on keeping the home clean, I post KIC (Keeping It Clean) Tips every week on my blog (settleforabundance.wordpress.com) anhoo, I love your baskets! Such an awesome idea AND it's pretty! :D

I did my clean out pretty similar to yours, with little hands in and out of the fridge, it is hard to keep it clean. You can check it out if you would like. http://klham.blogspot.com/2012/11/21-days-of-unfinished-projects-day-6.html

@ mrsjarrett412 how did u get your press n seal to stick? i couldn't ever get mine to stick i dont know if i needed to leave the fridge open longer so the condinsation evaporated or what? i just work my way around the kitchen (like a circle) when i wipe the counters from dinner to include the sink, microwave and frig. i only do the open spots tho, lol! i luv those baskets from target ours hasnt had anything like that lately - and yes what happened to the $1 spot very few choices are still a dollar!

I don't like cluttered surfaces either, and the older I get, the more it bothers me for some reason..but I think everyone has that one space that is so hard to keep clear, in my house it's the bar in the kitchen. Mail, recipes, etc..We give it a good clearing once a week and it stays that way about a day usually.!!

I clean out my fridge every Friday. We don't have a huge fridge so there's not alot of space to forget about things so there's usually nothing to throw out but I take everything out one shelf at a time and spray down the shelf with my biokleen, wipe them down and put things back in. It only takes about 15 minutes usually.

I actually take my shelves completely out, wash and dry them, then apply the press n seal... Then I leave a little extra press n seal on the edges of the shelf and then fold it over to stick to itself on the corners... I guess it mostly depends on if you can remove your shelves and if they are a flat surface (mine are glass) and not a wire-type shelf... I hope that was helpful and explained right LOL!

I'm slightly Type A so my fridge shelves each have their own 'residents'-- Top shelf, leftovers.
Middle right, drink pitchers. Middle left yogurt, pickles, applesauce, and any other glass or plastic containers. Etc.
My MIL's fridge {the avalanche 'o food} is what inspired me to keep a tidy fridge, that and having four kids in under 4 years -- to survive that, you NEED to be organized!
I LOVE the tip about the press and seal and also the baskets, especially for eggs. And they are indeed pretty!

Ha, clutter makes me crazy too and since hubby always has a lot of stuff lying around and I am not patient enough to wait for him to put it all away (I don't know where he wants it all to go) so when I declutter the kitchen counters, bookshelves etc. I take a little plastic box and simply put all my husband's things in it and then put the whole box in our office/guest bedroom for him to go through later. :) The kids' room also has storage boxes in the bottom shelves of the bookcase (4 big boxes) and we don't care much about what goes where. We have separate boxes for Lego and I try to keep the baby toys in one box to find stuff more easily for Levi. I always say to myself that I will go through one storage space in our home at a time and organize but I never get around to it as it seems to be enough work to do just to pick up stuff lying around. LOL. But at least not having to see the clutter is calming. :)

That sounds amazing! You sound so organized!! :D I think you're right about having lots of kids- you have to buy a ton of food and store it at once! LOL~ :D Thanks for sharing!

Oh, I like that idea- does he go through it later? I would try that and end up donating the whole box- lol! I know I stay more than busy picking up regular stuff too! :D good job, girlie! I was thinking about you this week, hoping everything was okay! :D

Hi Mandy! i first wanna say you are a huge inspiration. i have changed my eating habits because of YOU and of course being on my knees asking the Lord for help everyday!! i have a question for you though...wondering how you use your flax seed and i think you said at one time you used nutritional yeast? thanks jen

Well, hehe, he does have a couple of boxes to go through now. :) Though sometimes I kind of think most of the stuff ends up back on the counters before they ever reach a more organized storing space. :D I kind of don't mind as much if the office is more cluttered if that means that the space where we spend the most time is clutter-free as much as possible.

Things are absolutely ok here. We do have some issues with stress in different ways - if you want to know more I can email you when I find the time. But apart from that things are all right. :) Levi had his 1 year checkup yesterday and totally charmed everyone as usual. He's a very happy baby (except you know - when he's not :D).

What a timely post! I've been working at putting my fridge in order: certain things in the certain spots and not everything just thrown in like usual. I am definitely going to try the baskets idea! Wouldn't lemons/limes be pretty in it? Thanks for the idea. = )
