frugal mishaps {of the haircutting kind}

Because no frugal journey is without its mishaps, I just have to share one of the latest adventures I went on this week… ;)

So I’ve been cutting our boys’ hair for several years to save money- I figure it saves us at least $120 or more a year to do it at home. Several years ago we invested in a set of Wahl clippers, and I’ve been cutting their hair ever since, with the exception of a few special occasions. :)

I’ve never been good at it, but in the grand scheme of things- how much does it matter if they don’t have perfect hair? Not much, we figure. I’m no professional, so I nearly always waver when it’s haircutting time, but Rob insists that I do a great job and it saves us $30 a pop. So I do it anyway. :) Plus, we’ve paid $30 and been less than happy with the outcome plenty of times.

We hadn’t done any haircuts at our house since May, and it was TIME.

Noah was the first candidate to go under the clippers. Here’s the before:

IMG_9311-001

All was going well until, for maybe the second time in all of our haircutting history, the GUARD fell off in the middle of a cut!

IMG_9312-001

My eyes just got really wide, and Noah asked what happened and immediately started laughing…. {he was still laughing in the pic above}. He wanted to see it, so I took a picture of the tiny {ahem} mistake I’d made:

IMG_9313-001

Eeeeewww no. Rob thought I was going to have to shave it off completely, but I did my best to salvage the style, and here’s what came out of it:

Not too bad, I think. :P I can still see the spot, but luckily his blonde hair  is much more forgiving than darker hair. I actually really like how it turned out! He was such a good sport about it too. He thought it was hilarious his mama accidentally scalped him. That’s my boy. :)

After Noah’s extra-generous hair cut, I was a wimp and barely touched Elijah’s hair. He just had a little trim.

Turns out haircutting on little sleep can be a dangerous thing. ;)

Do you cut hair at home?
While I do, and love to save the money, it makes me appreciate the skill of hair stylists all the more!

Have you ever messed up a haircut like that? What happened? {please make me feel better, hahah!}

Do frugal mishaps happen to you too?

I cut the boys' hair at home. It's taken me a while, but I finally have it under control. As our son gets older, he likes a little style, so I can even do that now. I've messed it up plenty of times before though. Don't sweat it. It gets easier every time and it's only hair, it will grow back. :)

I love the after. I think he looks very cool and in style. I have cut my hubby's hair for several years, it is clipped all over with the same very short clipper and i have never had a mess up. I always seem to mess up on the bangs of my daughters or my grandson, cutting them way too short. It is just hair, dead cells, it grows. ;)

Oh my....first time I tried to cut my husbands hair, 6 1/2 yrs ago I thought it would be oh so easy, until I started and cut too much so since then we have always just used zero...ha!! But it is cheaper if I can do it for him, and I cut my daughters bangs too. Once in a while I take her to s salon for about $7-10.

this made me laugh and remember the time I was cutting my son's hair, and the clip came off of the razor and there was a big hole, I finally just shaved his head, and he would not take his hat off at school because he was mortified...Now it's funny because he shaves his head all the time...

I cut all of the hair in our home. I cut mine (not nearly as often as I would like,) my husband's, our 3 year old son's, our 1.5 year old daughter's (she only has needed 2 trims so far,) and our two miniature schnauzers. Right before Halloween I gave my husband a haircut that had everyone at his job teasing him, saying he looked like Mr. T. He started saying, "I pity the fool," and folks let up a little. My son is a really rough and tough 3 year old, and a blond hair blue eyed wonder. I gave him a buzz cut right before his sister was born and he looked like a meanie!!! I couldn't wait to let it grow out and I cringe every time my mom says "You cut his hair a little short again, didn't you." It's definitely a learning process, and the gaps in between cuts don't help! Good for you for sticking with it. AND... I think it turned out AWESOME!

I cut my husband's hair with clippers and the same thing happened a few months ago. The guard fell off in almost the same spot as your son's. My husband thought I did it on purpose because I really didn't feel like cutting his hair at the time. Thankfully my dad was standing there and was a witness to the guard falling off. haha!

I cut my boys hair and my husbands when he had hair. It is super easy to cut my one son's hair. It is straight and very forgiving. My other son has such curly hair. It is never an easy job to get it even. We leave his hair a little longer because once cut it will start to curl up and you can't see the mistakes as bad. I was afraid when they got into high school that they would their hair cut by a professional so that they could fit in, but they don't seem to care.

My Mum does my brothers' and Dad's hair at home - so much easier! There's a lovely woman at church with a young family who used to be a hairdresser, and she keeps my sisters' and I looking pretty. Mum has another friend do her own. Can't say we've ever had any 'oops' situations like you, but I think yours turned out fine - Noah looks great! Very stylish :)

I did that to my husband's hair. On the top of his head. Completely forgot the guard. He barely spoke to me for the rest of the evening. I alternated between giggling in private and feeling horrible. :D

Julianne said...

Ha ha, I'm laughing because I've done the same thing. Though his hair after seriously looks great! I did my son's hair when he was almost 2, the day before he and his big sister were going to get their pictures taken. Big, big mistake! It was so horrible that the only thing I could do to salvage it was to give him a buzz cut. When my husband came home he was a bit horrified and from them on he's taken over the hair-cutting duties. Seven years and three more kids later he still insists on cutting the boys' hair.

We don't have boys (three girls), but I do cut my husband's hair. Have been just over eight years now. He's been told it looks professional several times, so I think its worth it : ) My mom is a hairdresser, so my girls and I get free hair cuts...and color for me.

Anna Radchenko said...

awww - you did such a good job at fixing it! The end result looks great :) I cut my husband's hair a couple times before we were married (his family owned clippers)... but once we got married, we bought our own set but it was really cheap and didn't even get through his hair (it just got all tangled and coarse)... so I returned them and sent him to a hairdresser after that... I read the reviews for the clippers you use and it seems like they work very well and we may have to invest in them to save money! :)

I have two daughters and take them to a professional stylist about one a year to fix the errors of my past years' haircuts, lol.

What a blessing that he was so relaxed about it. It really turned out great! Very handsome. :) I started cutting my own hair in high school. I always said that it never seems straight when I get back from the hair dresser and I know I can cut an uneven style myself! LOL. I cut my children's hair, but I only cut my husband's hair when I'm well rested (so not for a couple years now, haha), but he is pretty particular and I mostly use scissors because I don't have much experience with (thus am intimidated by) clippers. :)

It turned out cute! I don't have an kiddos yet to cut but I do all my own dog grooming :) I have a springer spaniel and shave him 3-4 times a year which saves me about $200/year. I also clip all three dogs' nails, brush teeth, bathe once a week, and clean ears. All in all it saves me about $1000/year if you figure I cut each dog's nails every other week and it would cost me $10/dog each time ($780) and about $200/year for 4 grooming visits for one dog. I've messed up on the springer's hair several times but he doesn't seem to mind too much, he just gets cold when the weather starts to cool down!

Been there done that! No harm hes just as handsome as can be!

My husband asks me to cut his hair all of the time. I have done it numerous times in the 7 years we've been together, but I must say... he has an odd shaped head. Haha, it is so hard to cut so lately he's been having it done by someone else. One time I cut my sister's hair and was only supposed to give her a 'trim'. Let's just say it turned out super cute, but was also several several inches shorter than she wanted. She smiled politely and said thanks, but I could tell she was crying inside. We still laugh today about how I chopped all of her hair off.

Nancy said...

Oh, been there, done that! I was doing my son's hair, too, when the guard came off. It wasn't quite as bad (sorry) as yours, but definitely not good!! My hubby took him to the barber to get it fixed. They thought it was hilarious -- and it was not the first time they had seen that. Heck, we keep them in business. It was probably close to 25 years ago and we still laugh about it.

I do home haircuts for the WHOLE family!! My "ahem" back-up plan for myself is 3 really fun and different wigs!!

I like how it turned out, you did well improvising as you went!

Carol OurSearsKitHome said...

Oh, my, this is funny! You certainly did redeem yourself, and the fact that he laughed is priceless! Yes, I cut my hair and my daughter's for years. My hubby has always cut his hair.. One night (before I convinced him to shave it all down), he cut a big hole in the back of his hair. I heard him say, "oh, heavens!" and I doubled over laughing in the bedroom for quite some time thereafter!

I once trimmed my sons hair, he was about 7 and I was talking and forgot to put the guard on the clipper and started shaving his head. Took out a big chunk and I gasped in horror....my son saw it and said "cool!" so I just shaved the rest of his head short. He's 18 now and I still do his hair. Ya live & learn.

Anonymous said...

I've done all the kids' hair, and my own bangs and split ends... my husband won't let me touch his beyond cleaning up his neckline. He'd rather ONLY get a hair cut every 4-6 MONTHS than risk an incident like the one above! (Though I maintain, that could have happened to anyone!)

Cassie said...

I think you did great! He looks very stylish and it suits him well! I have cut my husband's hair since we were engaged. First time took me about an hour! HA! Now, I can cut his, our 3 boys, and my dad's in that time. :) Thankfully they are all easy cuts. I have had the "oops" moment too! One time with my oldest son...his hair is really thick on top and I was trying to "thin" it out....needless to say he ended us with A LOT less hair on top! :)

Crys said...

Done that! Mostly due to the little guys moving when they are suppose to be still :) I cut my husband's hair most of our early marriage, until I was 7 or 8 months pregnant with our first child and he went in to the office and the security guard said that hubby's hair was the most crooked cut he had seen! I do his trims now until he has less hair. I buzz the boys to save $$ in the summer and trim their necks and ears so we only pay for cuts a few times a year.

Erin said...

I have absolutely had a hair cut mishap...or two. The most recent was to my 2yr old son who has fine straight hair. He had been rocking a glorified bowl cut, but it was summer and his hair was bugging him. So I picked out the longest guard in the wahl box and one that was half that size going for a longer version of your little guys cut. Turns I way overestimated the size of the guards and he came out of it with almost a buzz cut. Poor dude. He wasn't thrilled with the look at first and told me to give him his hair back. But by supper time he was fine with it.
My other frugal mishaps have included horrible homemade meals that were not frugal bc they were healthy yet inedible. And homemade shampoo (ha!), and furniture fixer uppers that were a flop. But overall, we're still coming out ahead bc of these adventures :)

We have 4 kids and I cut everyone's hair, hubby included! I butchered our 4 year old daughter's hair the last time. It's sooooo thick. Hubby made me stop cutting. She wears it in pigtails a lot right now. :)

I cut all the kids' hairs. You did a great job! It looks really, really cute!!!

Julie said...

Wow, you have expensive places for haircuts there! I won't even pay $30 for my own hair! I found a local beauty school and for $13 I get a cut, highlights and styling. Even my husband's barber only charges $12. But a kids haircut at $30 that's crazy!
I like his new cut, very nice save!

Vicky said...

I agree that you did a SUPER job in salvaging the OOPS! :D And Noah looks totally cute with the cut!
I have been cutting hair FOREVER! Started with DH. My haircuts (even the first one) was WAY better than the ones his dad gave him during high school! Scary pictures! I went from cutting his hair and added 4 more through the years.....2 daughters and 2 sons. The daughters complained the most about the bangs.....or the lack thereof, LOL! The youngest son asked for a burr haircut once when he was maybe 7 or 8. You can imagine how upset he was afterwards when he looked in the mirror! Not understanding why he was so upset with the haircut when that was what he asked for, he finally got across that it was not a "burr" that he wanted, but a "bowl!" NOT MY FAULT!!! :D I'm still cutting DH's hair today, long after the kids have grown and left. But, I am now using clippers, not scissors!

It looks super cute. If someone didn't know that there had been a mishap there is no way they could tell.
I've been cutting my husbands and oldest son's hair for 3 years. I just gave our one year old his second haircut. That is NOT fun! lol He is a squirmy little butt and man that makes it hard but he has sooo much hair that I just had to cut it. That or put it in a ponytail lol but I think his daddy might object to that.
We figured out one time that $15 a haircut 6 times a year times 2 people is $180 so over 3 years its been $540 for just my husband and oldest not to mention what I save on trimming my daughters hair and letting mine grow out. Probably another $600 for us 2 girls over the last 3 years. Wow that's a ton of money when you stop to think about it...all for a $15 pair of clippers that came with scissors.

Noah's hair cut looks great! You definitely salvaged it and he looks so different, more grown up. Don't feel bad! Luckily, if it were too bad, you could have shaved it all off and he'd still look completely fine. When I was 6, I had hair down to my rear end and my mom would trim it for me. One time, I kept tilting my head and she just kept straigtening my head, and cutting. Finally, she gave up and brought me for a professional cut but at that point it was so bad, and she was so fed up, that she had them cut it all off. I had a bowl cut! No little girl wants that! So just be thankful it wasn't one of your little girls and you knew enough to take a step back and reexam before trying to fix it. He really does look great!

I cut my husband's hair too! I used to try and use a beard trimmer, but I had a little oopsies once too, so now I only use scissors for the hair. I still use the beard trimmer to do the edges of his hair, but no more bald spots for me! ;)

Oh my word! Your Noah laughing made me laugh! Since our young toddler is just reaching the point of having enough hair to get it cut I have started cutting it at home. I found a really helpful YouTube video but it still wasn't perfect ;-) At least they're young, right? One encouraging thing the mom in the video said was to keep doing it because you would only get better with practice. So cut on, Mama!

It turned out cute!

I've been cutting my husband's hair since we were first married, nearly 20 years ago! Amazingly, his is the only hair I *can* cut (curly and very forgiving)...I tried to cut my brother's hair once and he ended up having to shave his head. O.o

I think your son is a total champ for laughing through it! I used to cut my kids hair and one time I accidentally shaved off one of their side-burn bits (that little wisp of hair by their ear). I had taken the guard off to tidy up the edges but forgot I'd taken it off when I trimmed the side burn. Back before I was married when my husband was just a flatmate I came home from work to find my other flatmate had tried to give Andy a haircut. She'd tried to do it with scissors and the back if his hair had little circular holes in it. In the end Andy had to visit the local hairdresser to try and fix it up!

She has 2 boys...so I figured she meant $30 for both. (Sorry, I know you have 3 boys, but hopefully the haircutting for the baby is far in the future!) We use a RoboCutter, one that connects to a vacuum sweeper. My husband has done his own hair since about 17. Now we have 3 boys, and he cuts all their hair. We've never paid a dime to have hair cut in our home. I take that back...we visited the Dominican Republic one year, and my husband had his hair cut by a native. His first paid haircut ever!

Lois said...

Forgot to add...I think your mistake turned out to be a blessing in disguise. It looks awesome!!

My husband cut his hair to save money in law school. He decided to cut it a few hours before church, where he was ushering that day. Suddenly I heard a painful OH NO! He came out of the bathroom, with a missing sideburns. Forgot to put the safety on and shave off about a 1-2 inch wide stripe all the way to the top. So he finished it, and figured out he'd just ask someone else to usher and then wore a hat to church.
So we get to church and find out that not only was the church celebrating their 10th anniversary, but they were giving away baseball caps AND half the congregation was wearing them at the service. So he swapped out hats and ended up ushering with no one knowing

I have given several home cuts, however a friend gave our family a rather large gift card to a salon a couple of years ago. So, I haven't done one since. We used the last bit of that gift about a month ago and it is getting very close to time for a few haircuts. Our family has added one curly headed bundle of energy to the mix since my last endeavor, so we'll see what happens.

I think he looks gorgeous in both the before AND after photos - and with an attitude like he has towards his Mama's mistake - what a heart melter. You are blessed Mandy. I cut my boys' hair too (although occasionally I take them to the hairdresser). The previous hair cut I gave my eldest was the worst - done right before school in about 30 mins... lucky it was science dress up day, so we gelled it, added some metallic dust (aka fine silver glitter) and called him a mad scientist (complete with his daddy's lab coat -gaf taped to fit - and a whole lot of other gear!). He didn't mind and I was able to fix it up later on! :)

I always take my boy to the barber cause I just don't think I could get it right, BUT I do cut my 3 girls hair at home! It's just so much TIME to take all 3 of them and I'm usually just cutting a few inches off...no, I'm never as straight as a REAL hairdresser, but I think I do pretty good in the long run!! You did a great job salvaging his hair....and truly, what a sweet boy to laugh too!!

Despite the fact that my sister-in-law is a hairstylist and will gladly cut our family's hair for *FREE*, I continue to cut everyone's hair myself. I just have the 'do it myself' nature, I guess :). Cutting hair, for boys or girls, is bit of a learning experience. I'm proud to say that my clipper skills have improved for the boys and I can give them a decent trim, if they can manage to sit still! So I don't think you did a bad job. And boys look fine with a buzzcut anyways :)
